Three years on from the release of debut Coyote EP, ‘Bronze’, Sheffield-based producer Utah? Is back with ‘Last Light’ – a stark, five-track collection of breeze-block club slammers referencing grime, drill, bassline, rave and early ‘90s bleep techno.
As evocative as it is explosive, ‘Last Light’ carries the torch from the warped, wiry sounds and coarse textures of ‘Bronze’, this time building out a fuller, greyer world. True to Utah?’s one-of-a-kind, industrial palette, each track feels granite-plated; from the grimy, square-wave duels of frosty opener, ‘Central Reservation’, to the oscillating kicks and spiralling melodies of club thumper and title-track, ‘Last Light’.
EP centre-piece and lead single, ‘Outer Limit’ – a near six-minute salvo of rip-roaring, industrial 4x4 punctuated by dizzying, acid-y left-turns and powerhouse bassline – also demonstrates how fluid Utah?’s sound has become, with snarling closer ‘Rooftop Access’ the record’s most viscerally venomous and cold.
